The Park Road Association has announced the launch of the second seminar in its 2018 Small Business Owner Workshop Series, an initiative to assist local Park Road and West Hartford business owners and entrepreneurs in building better enterprises by connecting with resources and experts from the local area.
The April 26 workshop, “Tax Doesn’t Have To Be Taxing, Understanding Your Small Business Obligations,” will welcome two experts from the Department of Revenue Services (DRS) who will work with participants to help them better understand their tax obligations while also explaining recent changes to small business tax laws. The DRS will also go over CT Fresh Start, a government program that provides incentives to business owners who hold previously unreported tax liabilities.
“Tax is a tough topic and most small business owners bury their heads in the sand when it comes to understanding their obligations,” said John Paindiris, co-president of the Park Road Association and owner of Effie’s Place Restaurant in West Hartford. “We want to give our small business community on Park Road the opportunity to tackle these tough topics head-on by bringing the experts right to the front line. By being better informed, our small business owners can be more prepared, which will help them make better decisions for their businesses in the long run.”
The overall goal for the Park Road Association’s 2018 Small Business Owner Workshop Series is to give its business community access to best in class professionals who can help them take advantage of opportunities and tackle day-to-day setbacks in the short term while proactively planning for the future of their business in the long term.
“It’s easy to feel alone and get overwhelmed trying to juggle all the various aspects of being a business owner,” said Tracy Flater, co-president of the Park Road Association and owner of Playhouse on Park in West Hartford. “When we started planning for our Workshop Series, we polled the area businesses to find out what experts they wanted access to. Tax was high on the list, simply because of the level of complexity and the ever-changing laws. We are thrilled that the DRS answered our call and their experts are coming to Park Road to help our businesses get clarity on this complicated topic.”
The Park Road Association is excited to welcome Margaret Hill and Edward Shore to present on behalf of the DRS. Margaret has been a revenue examiner in the Operations Division of the DRS since 2014 and her expertise includes tax interpretation for various tax types, revising and rewriting forms and publications, processing low and moderate income housing applications, and responding to inquiries from taxpayers. Edward is an examiner in the Business Entity Tax Audit Unit and specializes in sales and use tax, withholding tax, and fraud audits. He has written training manuals for auditing in the hospitality and contracting industries.
“Tax Doesn’t Have To Be Taxing, Understanding Your Small Business Obligations” will take place on Thursday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at Zest 280 on 280 Park Rd. in West Hartford. Tickets are only $10 for Park Road neighborhood businesses and residents and $20 for all other businesses and residents.
