Police have been made aware of social media posts regarding a “teen takeover” at Westfarms on Saturday, May 16, and said there will be a heightened police presence and zero tolerance for disruptive behavior.
In a news release, the Farmington Police Department said they are coordinating with West Hartford Police as well as regional law enforcement partners and Westfarms management in response to the social media posts – which appear to show an AI-generated image of the Westfarms main entrance – regarding a “potential juvenile gathering” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at the mall, which spans the Farmington and West Hartford town lines.

“These types of rapidly organized, social media-driven events have been observed locally and nationally and are often unpredictable in nature,” Farmington Police said in a public safety advisory shared with We-Ha.com. “Information can spread quickly across platforms, leading to sudden increases in anticipated attendance and limited ability to verify intent, scope, or coordination in advance. As a result, these gatherings may present public safety concerns due to the potential for large, unstructured crowds and possible disruptive or unlawful behavior.”
In the advisory, Farmington Police said they will “be implementing a heightened police presence throughout the Westfarms mall property and surrounding areas on Saturday. Officers will be strategically deployed to deter disorderly conduct, ensure public safety, and respond immediately to any incidents that may arise.”
Neither West Hartford Police nor Westfarms management provided any details about specific plans, but West Hartford Police Capt. Aaron Vafiades said, “We will have a presence there as always.”
Farmington Police stated that a “strict zero-tolerance enforcement policy will be in effect. Any unlawful, disruptive, or dangerous behavior will be addressed promptly and may result in enforcement action, including arrest where appropriate,” and noted that the safety of all visitors to Westfarms is of highest priority.
“Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to speak with their teens about the risks and consequences of attending unsanctioned, social media-driven gatherings,” police said. “These events are not organized, not supervised, and can quickly become unsafe.”
The increased police presence will be visible, and Westfarms shoppers and visitors are asked to report any observed suspicious or disruptive activity as soon as possible.
“The Farmington Police Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust staffing and enforcement posture as needed in coordination with partner agencies and mall security to ensure public safety. Anyone with information regarding potential disruptive activity is encouraged to contact the Farmington Police Department at 860-675-2400,” the advisory stated.
