Saturday is Connecticut Recycles Day

Submitted by Catherine Diviney, Energy Specialist, Town of West Hartford/WHPS

CT Recycles Day is Saturday, Nov. 15. It’s a perfect time to make sure you are doing a good job recycling at home, just like we do here at work/school!

See if you know the answers to these recycling trivia questions:

What do the 3 chasing arrows on the recycling symbol represent?

Many people think the arrows represent “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!” but they don’t. They actually represent the three-step process that forms the closed, recycling loop: (1) collection of materials; (2) manufacturing into a new, recycled product; and (3) purchase of the product.

What year was the universal recycling symbol (3 chasing arrows) created and by whom?

It was created in 1970, by Gary Anderson, a 23-year-old college student at the University of Southern California, as part of a contest sponsored by Container Corporation of America. He won $2,500 and changed the world.
