Hall High School students have organized a Trivia Night event, but the fundraiser is in support of a cause that’s far from trivial.
Now in its second year, Trivia Night is one of the ways in which Hall High School’s “Warriors for a Cure,” an official club at the school, is supporting its American Cancer Society Relay for Life team. Trivia Night will be held on Friday, March 31, beginning at 7 p.m., in the Hall High School cafeteria.
“We raised just over $1,500 last year which was amazing,” said Lani Davidoff, one of the event organizers and a captain of “Warriors for a Cure.” She’s hoping to surpass that this year, and with 10 teams already registered that’s highly likely.
To organize Trivia Night, Davidoff has once more teamed up with Warriors for a Cure co-captain Abby Niranjan. Grace Olson, a junior leader of the Warriors for a Cure club, is also an event organizer. Warriors for a Cure club faculty advisors Nicola Culmo and Nora McHugh are also assisting.
Teams of six people will compete against each other during Trivia Night, answering questions about science, math, geography, sports, and entertainment. Culmo obtained questions are from the same source as last year’s questions, but there are no repeats.
The cost of participating is $20 per person, or $120 per team. Coffee, tea, and desserts will be provided, Davidoff said, and participants are welcome to bring other snacks or even dinner. The event is open to students as well as adults, and while younger children are welcome, the knowledge base targets an audience of at least late middle school, said Davidoff.
Sign-ups can be made as a team, or individuals can sign up separately and be placed on a team. Players can either sign up by dropping off a list of their team members and a check to the Hall High main office, by emailing the faculty advisers: Nicola Culmo at [email protected] or Nora McHugh [email protected], or by registering at the event itself.
The top three teams will receive prizes. “It will be a fun time,” Davidoff said.
The money raised through Trivia Night – 100 percent of the profit – will be donated to Relay for Life West Hartford as part of the team’s fundraising goal. Last year Warriors for a Cure, which has once again joined with Team Fagan, was one of the top teams. “This year we’re hoping to be number one,” Davidoff said.
Team Fagan, a RHAM High School group, honors the memory of Larry Fagan, Jr., a West Hartford man and Hall dad who passed away from brain cancer in February 2016. Fagan was a psychology and civics teacher at RHAM.
Davidoff said she first became involved with the Warriors for a Cure club, now in its seventh year of existence, as a freshman when her older sister captained the Relay for Life team. There were about 20 members at the time, and now there are about 80, she said.
“It’s a great motivator, a great way to help people,” she said of participating in Relay for Life. “It gets people involved in a fun way, and at the same time spreads awareness and raises money.”
