The West Hartford Public Schools and West Hartford’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are once again offering a Teen CERT training program during the first session of summer school, June 20 to July 1, 2024.
This class will allow students to earn credit toward graduation and receive their Community Emergency Response Team certificate.
Teen CERT is taught by a certified West Hartford Public School teacher and two West Hartford CERT instructors. This class is a mix of classroom and hands-on learning. Students will earn their American Heart Association Heart Saver certificate, and learn about fire safety, emergency preparedness, disaster psychology and light search and rescue.
The course includes hands-on demonstrations by the West Hartford Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, West Hartford Police Department, and West Hartford Animal Control. The class will also take a field trip to visit the Department of Public Works, Animal Control facility, and a fire station.
On the last day of class students participate in a search and rescue drill and fire extinguisher training. The goal of the class is not only to get credit toward graduation, but to better prepare students to prepare to handle many types of emergency situations.
The class runs from June 20 until July 1, 2024, from 8 a.m. until noon. The class is limited to 25 students.
