Students at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts High School will perform “West Side Story,” a classic musical that changed American theater more than 50 years ago, on April 29, April 30, May 6, and May 7.
The cast will feature more than 40 students from more than 25 Connecticut towns, including Sofi Andrews, Ryan Shearin, and Sydney Weiser, of West Hartford.
All performances will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Theater of the Performing Arts in Hartford.
With the book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and conception and choreography by Jerome Robbins, “West Side Story” is one of America’s most memorable musicals.
In “West Side Story,” two young lovers are caught between prejudice and warring street gangs on the turbulent streets of New York City in the 1950s. Its message and love story remains as powerful, poignant, and relevant today as it did 50 years ago, and its musical numbers, such as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” and “I Feel Pretty,” remain Broadway favorites.
Tickets to “West Side Story” are $25 and $15 for adults and $15 and $10 for students and senior citizens. Group rates are available. To purchase tickets, call 860-757-6388 on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can also bought in person at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts’ box office, and they can be purchased online at www.crec.org/theater. Additional charges apply to online ticket orders.
