A scholarship will be given to at least one music student in honor of Haig Shahverdian and his year’s of commitment to the West Hartford music tradition.
Submitted by Jenny Bronson, Hall High School
For more than 40 years Haig Shahverdian has committed his professional and personal time to the West Hartford community in general, and to the Hall High School Pops ‘n Jazz community in particular.
Through his tireless pursuit of musical and artistic excellence, Shahverdian has exposed countless students to an authentic representation of the host of skills needed to be successful in the arts. In fact, his dedication, commitment and passion make him an example of the attributes required to be successful in any professional field.
This year a new scholarship in Shahverdian’s name is being created and will be offered to one, possibly two, senior members of the Pops ‘n Jazz ensemble.
Members of the West Hartford community have an opportunity to donate to the scholarship from now until Nov. 30. The scholarship will be administered through the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and West Hartford residents and philanthropists Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goldfarb have graciously and generously offered to match the initial seed money raised, with the hopes that the first scholarship could be awarded in March 2017.
“West Hartford is fortunate to have a wonderful and supportive parent and student community, and the past and present members of the Pops ‘n Jazz community represent the gold standard of support and investment within that community,” said James Antonucci, Director of Bands at Hall High School in a statement. “What a great tribute to Haig’s work – helping performing arts students pursue their dreams as they head off to college.”
No gift is too small; any amount will help ensure Shahverdian’s spirit and dedication to excellence continues beyond the Pops ‘n Jazz process, inspiring students – year after year – to embrace their love of the performing arts and develop the skills that will help propel them into their future.
Donations should be made out to: The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, c/o The Haig Shahverdian Scholarship and mailed to 10 Columbus Blvd., 8th floor, Hartford, CT 06106.
