A fire that began on the exterior of a 19th century home on Arnoldale Road Friday afternoon was knocked down quickly by West Hartford Fire Department crews, and there were no injuries, Deputy Chief Jarrad Smith said.
According to Smith, a contractor was on the scene when the fire began. “They were using a heat gun to do some exterior work,” he said, and it appears that sparked a fire on the exterior of the home’s north side which then spread to a void space on the interior.
“When we got here we had some light smoke showing from that void space,” Smith said. “It took a little while to get access to it because of the age of the house and how many hidden areas there are.”
The nearly 5,000-square-foot home at 9 Arnoldale Road was built in 1898, according to town records.
Smith said the fire was wet down, and crews used their thermal imaging equipment to ensure there was no further extension.
No one was home at the time the fire began, and there were no pets in the house, Smith said. No injuries occurred.
The Fire Marshal’s Office will conduct a complete investigation. Damage was not extensive and the building appeared to be habitable, Smith said, but a representative of the town’s Building Department planned to confirm that before allowing access.
