The West Hartford Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a leaking underground propane tank on Cypress Road, which is located off Mountain Farms Road just south of Route 44.

“The incident is currently contained to a small geographic area and we have resources, including a propane contractor on scene,” Fire Chief Greg Priest said just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Priest noted that crews from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) emergency response division and other resources were contacted to ensure safe resolution of the situation.

All residents and residences that were potential in danger were also notified, Priest said.

Information about the possible cause of the leak was not available.

Fire department officials remained on scene until the leak was resolved, and Priest said the area was being cleared just before 3:45 p.m. with minimal disruption to area residents and other members of the community.

  • In my opinion this was not an isolated incident. I could smell it on my property ( and I do not have gas or a hook up), located miles away. The catastrophic environmental dangers are constant, continuous assaults against all. Planting gas lines all throughout the locality has no benefit and only adds to danger in the community to residents and visitors. Users be ware.
