Several of West Hartford’s roads are undergoing complete reconstruction in 2021, while others will be milled and repaved.

Road construction season has started, and a number of West Hartford streets are scheduled for complete reconstruction that includes installation of granite curbing and concrete driveway aprons, catch basin replacement, selective concrete sidewalk replacement, and repaving, while others will be milled and repaved.

The Engineering Division has announced the following roads are slated for the first round of repaving, beginning May 17 (weather permitting) and they have provided detours (see photos below).

  • Fern Street (Fernbrook to North Main St)
  • Fern Street (Mountain Road to Willowbrook Road)
  • Fernridge Road
  • Mountain Road (Glenwood Road to West Maxwell Drive)
  • North Main Street (Fern Street to Linbrook Road)

According to the engineering division, the milling of the existing roadway is expected to take one week, and will be followed by approximately two weeks of paving.

“During construction the roadways will remain open to local traffic and school buses only, and short delays are possible due to the construction activity,” the Engineering Division said in a news release.

While roads will be open to all traffic at the end of each business day, raised utility structures and rough pavement will remain, and motorists are urged to use caution and avoid the roadways if possible.

Additional rounds of repaving will be scheduled for July and September.

In addition, several roadways are scheduled for complete reconstruction, and will take place in the order shown below. Work on some of the roadways will not begin until the summer.

  • Fenbrook Road
  • Owings Road
  • Cornell Road
  • Ridgewood Road (Tunxis Road to Sedgwick Road)
  • Princeton Street
  • Arapahoe Road
  • Walbridge Road (Farmington Avenue to Fern Street)

Each roadway reconstruction project takes roughly one to two months to complete.

Roadway reconstructions are more complicated than re-paving and therefore take longer to complete, about one to two months.
