West Hartford Police assisted Hartford Police Tuesday morning in the apprehension of of two juveniles who had earlier eluded Hartford Police.

According to West Hartford Police, Hartford officers had unsuccessfully attempted to stop a blue 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee which had last been seen headed west on New Britain Avenue.

The vehicle was located at 90 Brightwood Lane, but was unoccupied, police said.

According to police, a Hartford K-9 attempted a track from the vehicle and that led them east to Elmhurst Circle. While the track was taking place, West Hartford Police said that they located and detained two juveniles on Elmhurst Circle.

According to police, the two juveniles were determined to have been involved in the incident. Police said that a third occupant of the vehicle was not found, but Hartford Police are following active leads to identify and locate that suspect.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. According to Assistant Superintendent of West Hartford Schools Andy Morrow, Webster Hill Elementary School followed a “secure the school protocol” during the time that the active investigation was taking place in the neighborhood.

“Any time that the police have concern about something in the neighborhood they follow a ‘secure the school’ protocol,” Morrow said. It’s not a lockdown, Morrow clarified, but means that anyone who is outside the school for recess or physical education class is brought inside. According to regular security measures, the doors always remain locked during the school day.

The secure status only lasted about 10 minutes, Morrow said.

The two juvenile suspects were turned over to Hartford Police.
