On Friday, Nov. 8, members of the CREC Colts high school football team visited Morley Elementary School to participate in the Second and Seven program.
Second and Seven is based out of Columbus, Ohio, and provides free books for high school student-athletes to read to second graders. CREC Athletics became involved in the program in the fall of 2023 and now ensures that every high school team in the district make at least one visit per season.
“Community service is a cornerstone of our athletic program and this experience is not only beneficial to the second graders who receive a free book and get to spend time with high school student-athletes, but the high school participants get a boost in their self-confidence and also get to experience that feeling that accompanies being a role model and doing something nice for others,” said Jonathan Winer, CREC athletic director and West Hartford resident.
The CREC Colts football team consists of players from four CREC schools – Academy of Science and Innovation in New Britain, Academy of International Studies in Bloomfield, Academy of Aerospace and Engineering in Windsor, and Academy of Computer Science and Engineering in Enfield.
