Local children, teens, parents and staff came together to do good for Good Deeds Day Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the Mandell JCC, Zachs Campus, 335 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford, CT.

More than 60 participants turned out for various programs put on by the Mandell JCC in honor of Good Deeds Day, a global initiative that unites people from more than 75 countries to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet.

At You Can Be a Super Hero! children and families baked cookies for local “hometown heroes,” including firefighters and police. While the cookies were baking, kids designed their capes, and took part in superhero training with “Captain America” (Dave LaPorte), taking a superhero oath to do good.

Simultaneously, 35 teens Cooked for a Cause with Chef Lindsay Perkins. In two hours, they made 100 pounds of food for Hands on Hartford, a local social service nonprofit organization that serves Hartford’s residents in need in the areas of food, housing, and economic security.

In the final program of the day, adults participated in the Pilates for a Purpose class to help support the 2017 Israel Ride and the Hazon and the Arava Institutes, two organizations working toward peace, environmental sustainability, and regional cooperation.
