Families in the West Hartford community are invited to take part in two engaging, practical events this April focused on one of today’s most pressing parenting challenges: navigating children’s screen time in a digital world.

Hosted by Ok to Delay West Hartford and West Hartford Public Schools, in collaboration with the West Hartford Community of Concern – and made possible by a grant from the West Hartford Prevention Partnership – the two-part series is designed to spark conversation, share real-world insight, and provide families with tools they can actually use.

Part 1: Screenagers: Elementary Age Edition
Thursday, April 23, Charter Oak International Academy

The first event kicks off at 5:15 p.m. with an Alternative Device Fair and complimentary pizza, giving families a chance to explore kid-friendly tech options in a relaxed, welcoming setting. At 6:15 p.m., attendees will gather for a screening of Screenagers: Elementary Age Edition, a documentary that takes an honest look at the challenges kids and parents face around screen use—from social media pressures to sleep disruption and classroom distractions. This event is appropriate for kids grades K-5.

Following the film, a live panel will feature a diverse group of voices, including:

  • Titania Jordan, author of Parental Control: A Guide to Raising Balanced Kids in the Digital Era
  • A middle school social worker and teacher offering firsthand perspectives from the classroom
  • Two seventh-grade students who have chosen to stay off smartphones and social media

Together, panelists will offer insight, answer questions, and open up a conversation that resonates with both parents and children.

Part 2: From Screenagers to Tech Contracts
Thursday, April 30, 6-7 p.m., Whiting Lane Elementary School

The second event is focused on action. Families will work side by side with local high school principals using guided templates and expert input to create a personalized family digital contract – a practical, take-home plan for managing technology use. No preparation or follow-up is required.

Open Invitation to the Community

“These events are meant to meet families wherever they are,” said organizers from the Ok to Delay Team. “Whether you’re already struggling with screen-time limits or just beginning to think about it, this is a space to learn, share, and figure it out together.”

Families are encouraged to attend one or both sessions. Children are welcome.

Event Details at a Glance:
