West Hartford Police have been able to identify the family of a toddler who was found walking around alone on Hillcrest Avenue near Stevens Street early Wednesday morning.

A resident contacted police at 6:23 a.m., to report seeing 2-year-old boy who was dressed only in a diaper and t-shirt. The temperature was in the mid-30s at the time.

According to police, no one in the immediate area recognized or could identify the toddler, and he was transported by ambulance to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for evaluation. Police said there were no injuries to the boy.

Police continued to search for the toddler’s family, and shortly after he was taken to the hospital students in the neighborhood recognized him and directed police to an apartment on Stevens Street.

According to police, when they spoke to the family they had just realized the boy was not inside the apartment. “No one, including the present adults, realized that the toddler had apparently exited the house and walked down the street,” police stated in their report.

Police said that they transported the child’s father to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to be reunited with his son.

DCF has been notified, police said.

Police said that no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
