The season to “shop, dine, stroll, and give” returns as the West Hartford Center Business Association’s We Care Card event launches on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020.
Now in its fourth consecutive year, the We Care Card event will be available for purchase and use for the 10-day period through Saturday, Nov. 7, and the donation to obtain a card ($50 or more) will all go to support Foodshare at a time when the nonprofit organization has seen greater than ever demand from those in Hartford and Tolland counties who are hungry or food insecure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Foodshare, roughly 1 in 9 people in Greater Hartford do not know where their next meal is coming from.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the drive-through food pantry Foodshare has been operating at Rentschler Field in East Hartford has served 150,000 families, and more than 6 million pounds of food have been distributed.
Those who obtain a We Care Card will be able to obtain up to 20% off at all participating businesses for the entire duration of the event. Customers will also be able to donate to Foodshare at participating restaurants, including Barcelona, Bartaco and Vinted Wine Bar.
For every $50 donated, Foodshare can provide 125 meals to those in need.
Since partnering with Foodshare for its fundraising efforts, the West Hartford Business Association has raised over $52,000, which has been turned into more than 130,000 meals.
“This is a great way for all of us to give back,” said Kimberly Moster of Kimberly Boutique and Kimberly Gift. “Everyone feels good about giving to Foodshare and then to get 20% off for 10 days in The Center – it’s a win-win!”
Local resident Kristin Beth Ferris said due to the pandemic, she wants to start her holiday shopping early. “I want to support local and think the Care Card is perfectly-timed to do so. What better way to support our local shops and a local non-profit like Foodshare who is doing so much good in the community? Makes me feel like I’m contributing in this crazy world.”
More information about the We Care Card and participating business can be found on the West Hartford Center website.
Most participating businesses have We Care Cards available for purchase. They can also be purchased online here through Eventbrite.
