West Hartford Police took two juveniles into custody at approximately 7:45 a.m. Monday morning in connection with a vehicle reported stolen from Longmeadow, MA, and also discovered property that was the subject of recent burglaries.
According to police, the stolen car, which was being tracked by GPS, was spotted with several occupants in the area of Mountain Road as well as on I-84 west in West Hartford on Monday morning.
Unmarked units were able to follow without initiating a pursuit, and although they reportedly lost sight of the vehicle several times, police said it was eventually located, unoccupied, in the area of Hollywood Avenue on the Hartford/West Hartford line.
Police said that several parties were observed running through backyards in the immediate area, and after a foot chase two individuals were apprehended and detained. At least one suspect got away, police said. Hartford and Newington police, as well as a Connecticut State Police K9 assisted.
“We have probable cause to believe they were running from the stolen car,” Lt. Eric Rocheleau said of the two juveniles who were detained.
According to Rocheleau, the juveniles “were very familiar to West Hartford Police” and have a long history regarding stolen cars and burglaries.
One of the juveniles is currently a resident, and one was also already wanted on a “taken into custody”(TIC) order, police said.
An officer suffered a leg injury during the foot chase, police said.
The vehicle was recovered without damage. Police also recovered items reported stolen from recent burglaries.
Police from Longmeadow, MA, are also involved in the investigation.
