Halloween is a fun day full of costumes, imagination, and of course, lots of candy. It’s important to remember that while Halloween comes just once a year, establishing nutritious daily eating habits has the greatest impact on a child’s health.

Shana, the registered dietitian at the ShopRite of West Hartford, offers a few snack ideas to make Halloween a healthier day for kids while still keeping it fun and interesting:

  • Try adding green guacamole “slime” to veggies or whole grain crackers for a dose of heart-healthy unsaturated fat.
  • Try popcorn tossed with cinnamon and sugar or chocolate-covered fresh fruit. Make white chocolate covered strawberries as “ghosts”; use mini dark chocolate morsels as the eyes.
  • Sip on warm apple cider with cinnamon sticks or green spinach and fruit smoothies – use a sharpie marker and make jack O’ lantern faces on the disposable cups.
  • Try making Shana’s “Monster Mash” (Purple Sweet Potato Oatmeal) or Shana’s “Silly Apple Bites.”

Almost any food can be turned into a fun activity or creepy creature when you add Googly Eyes to it! Check out Shana’s “Googly Eye” Recipe:

What you will need:

White Chocolate Chip Morsels (1 for each eye)

Mini Dark Chocolate Chip Morsels (1 for each eye)

Microwave safe dish & parchment paper

Instructions: Place white chocolate morsels (tips up) on parchment paper, on a microwave safe dish. Microwave until chocolate has melted slightly, about 1-2 minutes. Once melted, carefully place a mini dark chocolate chop morsel on top of each white chocolate chip, lightly pressing the two together. Place dish in refrigerator and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes.
