Sunday, June 26, is a day to get rid of materials that are no longer needed around the house.
The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) will be holding a collection of household hazardous waste from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Public Works facility at 17 Brixton Street in West Hartford. The collection is open to residents of all MDC member towns and there is no cost to dispose of materials.
Household hazardous wastes include items that cannot be safely thrown away as trash or poured down the drain, and through the MDC HazWaste program the items will be disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. These items include kitchen cleaners, chemicals typically used in a garage or workshops, solvents, and yard insecticides. Used oil is also eligible for disposal at the June 26 collection. A complete list of eligible materials can be found here.
All items should remain in their original containers, and should be placed in a box which MDC representatives will remove from your vehicle.
The MDC will also hold a HazWaste collection in West Hartford on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Brixton Street location. West Hartford residents are also permitted to attend hazardous waste collections in other MDC member towns, including Sept. 24 at MDC Poquonock WPCF, 1222 Poquonock Avenue, Windsor; Oct. 1 at MDC Rocky Hill WPCF, 80 Goff Brook Lane, Rocky Hill; Oct. 15 at Public Works Garage, 6 Stanton Road, Windsor Locks; and Oct. 29 at MDC East Hartford WPCF, 65 Pitkin Street, East Hartford.
GYL Financial Synergies, which is expanding its offices in West Hartford’s Blue Back Square, is offering a secure paper shredding event on Sunday, June 26, from 9 a.m. until noon, at The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive.
There is a limit of two boxes or three paper grocery bags per person, and participants should register in advance through this link.
