As the 2023-2024 school year came to a close, the West Hartford Crossing Guard Association held its yearly End of the Year/ Farewell Banquet on June 12, at Rockledge Grille.
This year’s get together held a special meaning as it was also a chance to bid farewell to a very special crossing guard, Carolejane “CJ” Barrett, who served the town for 38 years. CJ was honored with a special plaque by West Hartford Police Capt. Daniel Moffo and Sgt. Amanda Martin. The plaque was designed and constructed by another longtime crossing guard, Janet O’Connor.
The ceremony also honored two other crossing guards, Janet Williams, who served the town for 10 years, and Janice Wilson who served the town for eight years – over a half-century of service compiled by these three dedicated crossing guards.
Farewell speeches were made by Moffo, Martin, and retired Capt. Jeffrey Rose, who was in attendance and had supervised the crossing guards for many years.
According to Crossing Guard Association President Glenn Catania, CJ Barrett was “one of a kind. She served the town with such dedication, commitment and skill. CJ was part of the Training Team for newly hired guards and Association president for many years. She was well liked and admired by all within the guard force and general public. Janet Williams and Janice Wilson will also be missed at their posts combining 18 years of excellent dedication and performance to the town.”
According to Catania, it takes a special person to be a crossing guard and be able to withstand all sorts of New England weather. The job can be dangerous and the commitment is demanding. These three crossing guards are an example of total dedication to the students, parents, the Board of Education, and public safety.
The entire guard force, Board of Education and West Hartford Police Department wishes all three individuals the best of luck and thanks for their dedicated service.
