Quick work by the West Hartford Fire Department in response to a blaze that broke out Friday afternoon in a four-story apartment building at 98 Caya Avenue kept the damage contained to the unit of origin, Fire Chief Greg Priest said.
Dispatchers received a report of a possible fire at 3:37 p.m. Friday, and the West Hartford Fire Department and West Hartford Police Department responded. Police arrived first and reported heavy smoke, and units from the fire department arrived at 3:43 p.m., and discovered a blaze in a third-floor apartment.
According to Priest, the fire was knocked down by 3:52 p.m.
There were no injuries reported, and all occupants had evacuated before crews arrived, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office, and the structure was being evaluated by a representative of the Building Official’s Office to determine whether or not it was habitable. Early Friday evening, officials were hopeful that none of the other residents of the 24-unit brick apartment building, which was constructed in 1969, would be displaced, other than the occupants of the unit where the fire originated, which was impacted by smoke and water damage.
The West Hartford Fire Department expressed thanks to the police department, as well as mutual aid partners who cover the town while units were committed to the Caya Avenue incident.
